Eric S. Yuan was born on February 20, 1970, in Tai’an, Shandong Province, China, to parents who were geological engineers. As a child, he collected construction scraps to recycle copper for cash. In 1987, as a first-year university student, Yuan was inspired to develop videotelephony software during his 10-hour train rides to visit his girlfriend, envisioning a more convenient way to “visit” her. He earned a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics with a minor in computer application from Shandong University of Science and Technology and a master’s degree in geology engineering from China University of Mining and Technology in Beijing. In 1995, after attending a speech by Bill Gates in Japan, Yuan decided to move to Silicon Valley, applying for a U.S. visa nine times before finally being granted entry in 1997.
